Pencil Weights FAQ

What are pencil weights used for in fishing?

Pencil weights are long, narrow sinkers designed to get your bait down while keeping a more natural presentation. They’re commonly used for drifting, vertical fishing, and bottom rigs where current control and reduced snagging are important.

What size pencil weight should I use?

The right size depends on depth, current, and boat speed. Lighter pencil weights work well in shallow water or slow drifts, while heavier weights are better for deeper water, stronger current, or faster drifts when targeting stripers.

Why use pencil weights instead of egg sinkers?

Pencil weights track straighter in current, hang up less on rocky bottoms, and provide better depth control while drifting. Many anglers prefer them when fishing structure or when a clean, vertical presentation matters.

Are pencil weights good for drifting for stripers?

Yes — pencil weights are especially effective for drifting for stripers. Their slim profile helps reduce drag and provide better depth control with less “scope” in your mainline, making them ideal for live bait and cut bait presentations during controlled drifts.

Do pencil weights snag less than other sinkers?

In most conditions, yes. The narrow shape of pencil weights allows them to slide through rocks and structure more easily than round sinkers, reducing hang-ups and lost tackle.

These pencil weights are used daily by experienced striper anglers who need consistent depth control in real-world fishing conditions
